I think it would be totally unethical (well, at least partly unethical) to write about it here, in a public forum, but my semester hasn't even started, and I'm already upset / annoyed / frustrated with my students.
Is this normal? Am I just a bad teacher?

students. they make you crazy. especially when they tell you that you seem grumpy. i mean, come on. what the hell can they expect after a "hello" like that! but students. it's no small part of why we do what we do. there are the books, of course. the research, well maybe. the writing, yes. but the chance to engage others with our ideas about books--isn't that why we sign on? isn't that what we hope for? the problem is, sometimes we end up circulating prompts they don't bother to read and holding back from writing (in purple pen, of course) "this is really dumb and a pointless waste of my time!" in the margin. then sometimes we get to talk about why we read c.s. lewis and what alice is really doing with the mad hatter.
